Smoke & Slow

Editorial Policy

The standards behind everything we publish — independence, accuracy, and how we handle corrections.

Independence: money never decides rankings

Smoke & Slow earns affiliate commissions (see our affiliate disclosure), but commissions never influence which products we recommend or how we rank them. The reasoning behind a pick is identical whether the link earns us anything or not. When a cheaper or simpler option is the better choice for a beginner, that’s our pick — even if a pricier product would pay us more. We do not accept payment for placement, and we do not accept free products in exchange for coverage.

Accuracy and sourcing

Every factual claim on this site traces to a source. Product specifications are read from the manufacturer’s or retailer’s own listing on a dated visit, and that attribution appears on the product. Food-safety temperatures come from the USDA and are cited on the page. Where a maker doesn’t publish a figure, we print “Not published” rather than guessing. We never fabricate reviews, ratings, star scores or test results, and we never claim hands-on testing we didn’t do. Our full methodology is on how we pick.

Prices

Prices are pulled live from Amazon and stamped with the date they were checked. If our automated price check stops running, prices are hidden and replaced with a “check price” link rather than shown stale. We never hand-type a price into an article.

Updates and review cadence

Roundups are reviewed periodically and their “last updated” date is revised when we make a substantive change. Picks are re-checked against availability, and reference pages like our times and temperatures chartare re-verified against their sources. Because prices are live, they’re current by design.

Corrections

We make mistakes, and we’d rather fix them than hide them. If you spot an error — a wrong spec, an out-of-date detail, a temperature that looks off — please contact us. We’ll check it against the source and, if you’re right, correct it. Significant corrections are reflected in the page’s “last updated” date.

AI and authorship

Content on Smoke & Slow is researched and edited by a human (Stephen V.) against the standards above. Whatever tools assist in drafting, a person is responsible for every published claim, and the sourcing and honesty rules on this page apply regardless of how a draft was produced.

Not professional advice

Smoke & Slow is written by an enthusiast to help beginners. It is not a substitute for the safety instructions that come with your smoker, or for professional food-safety guidance. When in doubt on safety, follow your manufacturer’s manual and the USDA.
